Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta’s 10th Woman of Inspiration 2017-2018 Presented by Syncrude Announced
(Fort McMurray) Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude are proud to announce the 10th nominee for the Women of Inspiration series 2017-2018:
Mehar Rashid Ms. Rashid moved to Fort McMurray in 2009 and started her career as a Kindergarten teacher with the Fort McMurray Public School District. She then moved on to Vice Principal and teacher at Composite High School. Her passion for teaching was evident from the beginning and she remains committed to ensuring that all kids have a strong foundation for future learning and success. Mehar made her mark as a teacher and now she serves as the Principal of the Fort McMurray Islamic School. She continues to impress those around her with her strong work ethic, leadership and commitment to the success of her students.
As the first female principal of the school, Mehar is breaking down stereotypes and showing her students that anything is possible. She is well respected in the community and has been instrumental in the success of the school. Mehar believes in working together collaboratively and building relationships. Members of the School Council describe her as “someone who promotes a sense of belonging and provides a safe and caring environment for our children.” Parents and School Council all agree that she “has the ability to engage, motivate and inspire those around her.”
Mehar Rashid treats the school community as her family and she prides herself in knowing the name of every student in the school. She serves as a positive and strong role model for her students. “Sister Mehar is very smart, kind, honest and trustworthy. She is always smiling and cares about us and always stops to talk to us and see how we are doing. She is very helpful and caring. When I grow up I want to be confident and strong like her,” states one grade 4 student.
As principal, Mehar Rashid has taken the initiative to make the school experience positive by introducing and encouraging a multiple of clubs and activities and by encouraging students to get involved in their Girls Incorporated® Of Northern Alberta Page 2 of 2 community. Teachers and staff admire her leadership, vision and passion for the school. Marianna Furlong, a grade 5 teacher sees Mehar as a strong role model.” I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work alongside Mehar Rashid. She is incredibly hard working, intelligent and compassionate leader who is always looking out for the best interest of her students and staff. She leads by example. Her commitment to excellence is evident through the successes of our students. Mehar sets a very strong example for the young women in our school as she is a positive female role model in a leadership position. I believe that Mehar exemplifies what it means to be a Woman of Inspiration” states Mark Dolmont, Vice Principal of the Fort McMurray Islamic School.
Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta will honour Mehar Rashid and 11 other nominees at the Women of Inspiration Celebration which will take place June 16, 2018.
The Women of Inspiration is a partnership between Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude, with a goal to recognize women throughout the Wood Buffalo region who inspire others, break new ground or old barriers and help create change. The series also aims to show local girls positive role models who live right here.
